Madison, WI-based The Kitchen Gallery announced that it has plans to shutter the store by the end of March. The store has been opened since 2007 and has undergone three changes in ownership. The Kitchen Gallery is currently owned by Katrina Kelly, who purchased the retail outlet five years ago.
“Our lease is up for renewal and we have made what has been an immensely difficult decision to close up shop rather than renew. We are very grateful to everyone who has supported us so wholeheartedly throughout the years! We will miss talking all things culinary with you and helping you find what you need to make cooking fun and delicious,” was posted on the store’s Facebook page.
According to The Cap Times, a local media outlet, several factors led to the Kitchen Gallery’s closing. Years of construction on the east side of the Capitol Square, Doty Street and King Street cut down on summer foot traffic at the store.
But more than that, Kelly said, was the phenomenon of shoppers coming in to ask questions about All-Clad sauté pans, Emile Henry tagines and Henckels knives, only to leave and buy the items online.
Kelly also noted that product mix may have hurt repeat sales, as she sold a limited number of gadgets and focused more on “heirloom-quality products” that were made to last.
