Southern Season To Postpone Growth During Bankruptcy

As Southern Season navigates through bankruptcy proceedings, the Chapel Hill, NC-based housewares specialty retailer has nixed plans to revamp its online store and will not open two new locations, according to a report in the Raleigh News & Observer.

The company’s attorney said the web and store plans were changed after objections from creditors. Southern Season’s largest creditor, investment firm Southern Bridge, is requesting that the retailer be sold, the report said.

To date, the company has received $1.4 million in loans since filing for bankruptcy in June. The company, the report indicated, is hoping to emerge from bankruptcy by December.

Southern Season opened its Chapel Hill flagship store in 1975, which remains open. The store also operates three smaller Taste of Southern Season stores in Raleigh, NC; Asheville, NC; and Charleston, S.C. Southern Season shuttered its Richmond, VA, store in April and recently announced the closing of its Mt. Pleasant, SC-based location.
