NPD Reports Housewares Sales Uptick, Casual Tabletop Bright Spot

The NPD Group determined that the housewares industry saw a modest sales gain in 2010 after an 11% decline in 2009.
In 2010, cookware, bakeware and cutlery dollar sales each grew between four and five percent, the market research firm concluded. Within tabletop, the bright spots were in casual and value-based items. The combined quality casual and housewares dinnerware segments added up to 83% of the market in 2010, up from 78% in 2007. Dinnerware sets made up 52% of 2010 sales, up from 46% in pre-recession 2007.
For the research, quality casual dinnerware included porcelain and bone china without a metal accent band, stoneware, earthenware and crystal. Housewares dinnerware included glass, tempered glass, ceramic, plastic, stoneware and earthenware for brands not included in quality casual.
