Fort Collins, CO-based The Cupboard has been in business since 1972 and has continued to evolve and thrive as the years have gone on.
With no prior retail experience and a $5,000 loan, Cary Hewitt opened The Cupboard in the Northern Hotel building at 174 N. College Ave. in downtown Fort Collins. Now, the store spans more than 10,000 square feet. His son, Jim Hewitt, now owns the store and continues to position it for continued growth.
The store’s footprint, though, doesn’t stop in Colorado. Inspired by The Cupboard is Mt. Pleasant, SC-based The Coastal Cupboard, which was started after John Pitner and his family moved to the area and realized that the community lacked a place like the gourmet housewares store. That store has also transitioned to the second generation. It is owned by Pitner’s son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Joy Pitner.
