Ben Salmon, owner of South Orange, NJ-based Kitchen A La Mode, has announced that he is retiring from the independent gourmet industry as a store owner. Effective October 1, the store has changed hands and is now owned by Cat Fisher, who also owns Sadie’s, an apparel and gift store in South Orange.
“Personally, I have so loved being intertwined with Kitchen a la Mode for the last 10 years. My customers, my vendor partners and my fellow retailers from across the country are a big part of who I am today. I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Salmon wrote in a farewell post on the store’s Facebook page.
Salmon opened Kitchen A La Mode a decade ago and has since become an active member of the independent gourmet housewares community. He served on the GC Buying Group advisory panel and was named a 2016 GOURMET INSIDER® All-Star. Read his All-Star story here.
“Kitchen a la Mode has been successful because of all of you and I don’t know many folks that value a shop’s community as much as [Fisher] does,” he said of the store’s new owner. “I hope you can take a moment to welcome [Fisher] into the Kitchen a la Mode family. Stores like this are the lifeline of downtowns and the hallmark of customer service and the retail experience. I look forward to watching Kitchen a la Mode grow and evolve through the years and continue to garner recognition and awards from the industry.”
