NEW YORK— The 2011 Housewares Design Awards, presented by HomeWorld Business Magazine with the educational cooperation of the International Housewares Association, included a number of gourmet-related products that could provide retailers with an opportunity to tell creative new merchandising stories for their customers this year.
The event, held February 9 at New York’s Marriott Marquis Hotel, presented as its theme “Design That Works,” focusing attention on products that simplify or improve consumers’ lives through innovative, yet functional design enhancements.
In addition to individual category winners, Gold, Silver and Bronze awards were presented to three “Best of the Best” products selected from among all category winners. The Silver and Bronze awards were presented to gourmet products with the Silver going to Design Manufacture Distribution LLC, for its Perfect Portions Food Scale + Nutrition Facts. The product was also a winner in the Food Preparation Electrics Category.
Mastrad took home the Best in Category award in Cutlery & Accessories, along with a “Best of the Best – Bronze” award for its 4-inch Ceramic Paring Knife. “Ceramic knives are sharp so we created a pivoting handle, which protects the blade and makes it much more safe for users,” said Mathieu Lion, group president of Mastrad. “Design is first and foremost but first is application and usefulness of the product. Design which isn’t useful does not work.”
Zoku LLC was honored with the Best in Category award for the Cookware & Bakeware category for its Quick Pop Maker frozen treat maker. “We saw ice pops and said no one has done anything interesting, could we make them faster?,” said Ken Zorovich, president of Zoku. “Design is extremely important. How the product looks, branding, form, function, manufacturing, it all comes down to good design.”
Villeroy & Boch’s La Classica Contura features a design inspired by the domes and rotundas of Europe. The collection boasts strong lines with architectural undertones. It is made from dishwasher and microwave-safe bone porcelain.
